ICA Miami presents a poetic introduction to the work of Miami-based artist Reginald O'Neal. Through hyperreal painting rich with art historical reference, O'Neal tells a story influenced by his experiences of growing up in a public housing project in Miami’s historic Overtown neighborhood. The scenes in his paintings are flush with intimate moments and interactions, community engagement and transformation, as well as neglect and violence, reflecting everyday life in the community while shedding light on the artist's own experiences.
In 2020, ICA Miami acquired the work Zipper (2019) from O'Neal, which depicts an acquaintance of the artist bearing surgical scars resulting from gun violence, represented in a classical pose and mannerist lighting. The video is a fragmentary document that leads to the artist and his work.
